ZIRO, ARUNACHAL PRADESH
We at Shutter Souls Creatives had planned to attend the Ziro Music Festival 2016, and had our plans set accordingly. The Ziro Festival of Music is one of the best outdoor music festivals in India. It’s held in Hong Village in Ziro Valley, Arunachal Pradesh which is home to the Apatani tribe.
Ziro is a beautiful valley in Lower Subansiri District of Arunachal Pradesh. It is located at an altitude of 5600ft above sea level and has a mild climate. However, the winters are known to be very cold. It is included in India’s Tentative List for UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Apatani tribe inhabits here mostly but there are few Nyishis as well. Their livelihood is predominantly dependent on agriculture and the amazing yellow paddy fields are a witness of that.
We set our foots in Guwahati after a long and arduos 30 hour train journey from Bhubaneswar. It was a day’s halt in Guwahati before we could proceed to Ziro. Since we were a group of four people, we decided to book a cab which would manage our to and fro journey. Booking a cab was a good decision indeed. We got to witness so many beautiful and amazing landscapes on our way. It was a 14 hour tiring journey to Ziro. We had to get our permits done in Guwahati for entering the state of Arunachal Pradesh. It is impossible to describe the exact impact of that first moment when you enter Ziro and walk up the roads that gazes onto lush paddy fields with a lone house standing amidst an endless field of gold, with wispy clouds suspended over rolling plains surrounded by silent, watching mountains. We camped in the entire journey, and were lucky enough to be hosted by a local family who served us delicacies the entire time.
Apart from the awesome music and picturesque location, the local delicacies and rice beer was the next best thing about this festival. There were variety of traditional pork, beef, chicken dishes. Some unheard items like frog fries and roasted grasshoppers were also seen at some of the food stalls.
